De Jonge, Fraser, Ally, Mickle and Perreira highlight 1st round matches

The historic Banks Light Beer 3 day Inter Zone tournament sponsored by Banks DIH Ltd and organised by the Berbice Cricket Board started on Friday last with two matches.
Lower Corentyne led by a brilliant all round performance from national Under-15 captain Shawn Perreira earned first innings points over Central/Upper Corentyne at the Port Mourant Cricket Ground while at the Cumberland Cricket Ground centuries from Maxie De Jonge and Raid Ally and a 5 wicket haul from left arm spinner Troy Mickle led New Amsterdam/Canje to first innings points over West Berbice.
Both matches had their second day’s play washed out due to heavy overnight and early morning showers.

At the Port Mourant Ground Lower Corentyne led by the veteran Renwick Batson won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Harrinarine Chattergoon and Dominic Rikhi gave the visitors a solid foundation with an opening stand of 76 before Chattergoon was caught off medium pacer Junior Blair for 40 (7 x 4).
Rikhi was then stumped by Collis Cort off Rajiv Ivan for 37 (5 x 4). Ivan then bowled Batson for 5 at 120-3. Ranga Latchana was bowled for 36 by off spinner Steven Latcha at 132-4. Contributions from Clinton Pestano 28, Manoj Pooranauth 25, Jason Sinclair 24 and Eon Hooper 20 carried Lower Corentyne to 229-8 before Berbice ‘A’ team player Troy Mathieson and Shawn Perreira joined forces to add 85 for the 9th wicket.
Mathieson contributed 56 (4×4) before he was dismissed by Moshin Perkhan. Perreira and Loyden Lewis then added 44 for the last wicket which was broken when Perreira was bowled by Rajiv Ivan for 56 (4×4) while Lewis was unbeaten on 25. Bowling for Central/Upper Corentyne Ivan ended with 4-73 off 30.1 overs while Latcha took 3-68 off 25 overs.
In response the home team were dismissed for 118 off 44 overs as Perreira returned with his leg spin to take 4-44 off 13 overs, his spin twin Loyden Lewis took 3-13 off 8. Medium pacers Renwick Batson and Clinton Pestano had struck early, Moshin Perkhan (11) and mark Lionel (14) were dismissed to leave their team at 27-2. Ivan and skipper Latcha then added 70 important runs for the 3rd wicket before the impressive Lewis deceived the experienced Ivan to knock over his stumps for 48 (8×4) and then had Latcha caught and bowled for 24.
Only former national player Homchand Pooran and Yogindra Harrinarine with 15 each reached double figures among the remaining batsmen. With an overall lead of 240, Lower Corentyne reached 119-6 in their second innings with Jason Sinclair 56 not out (5×4) and Renwick Batson 40 (4×4, 1×6). Homchand Pooran claimed 3-36 runs off 13 overs and Ivan 2-38 off 12 overs.
Over at the Cumberland ground, West Berbice batted first after winning the toss and were given an opening partnership of 29 by Romain Boodram and skipper Artley Bailey before Boodram was caught at the wicket off medium pacer Maxie de Jonge. It soon became 50-2 when Andrew Dennis was sent packing by left arm spinner Troy Mickle for 10.
Bailey was joined by the hard hitting Keith Fraser and together they added 66 for the 3rd wicket before Fraser was caught at long on off the bowling of Farouk Hussain for 46 (1×4, 6×6). Bailey continued to bat well until he fell for 79 (8×4, 5×6) but apart from Kwesi Mentore (30) the rest of the batting was unable to cope with the spin of Mickle and Raid Ally. West Berbice were eventually dismissed for 228; Mickle claiming 5-47 off 13.3 overs and Ally 3-44 from 16.
New Amsterdam/Canje in response lost national Under-19 player Joemal La Fleur at 5-1; pacer Keyron Fraser had him caught for 3. Skipper Raid Ally and Maxie De Jonge then added a record 268 for the 2nd wicket with a wide range of attacking shots. De Jonge cracked a brilliant 137 (18×4, 3×6) while Ally hammered 111 (19×4, 1×6).
Devon Clements 37 and Kevin Ramdeen 20 made vital contributions as the home team were dismissed just before close of play for 365. Berbice ‘A’ pacer Keyron Fraser took 6-125 runs from 21 overs while impressive Under-17 spinner Waqar Hassan had 3-73 from 15 overs.
Public Relations Officer of the Berbice Cricket Board Hilbert Foster noted that the Board was very pleased with the first round matches as the standard of play was very high and competitive while several players were able to impress the senior selectors with their brilliant individual performances.
The tournament continues this week with New Amsterdam/Canje clashing with Central/Upper Corentyne while West Berbice would face off with Lower Corentyne.
