Clifford Ali, of Wismar Hill, Linden, was yesterday remanded to prison after making a court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
The allegation is that on September 12, at Wismar, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded his wife Colence Ali, with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
A second charge stated that Ali, on the same day used threatening language against his wife, thereby breaching the peace.
Police prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question, Ali asked his wife to wash his clothes and she refused. The defendant became angry and picked up a knife, approached his wife and started to point it in her face, threatening to kill her. A scuffle ensued between the two parties and the woman received a slash to the face, forcing her to receive medical attention.
Telford objected to bail on the basis of the prevalence of domestic violence in the society and noted that if granted bail, there was a high likelihood that the defendant might want to return home and further interfere with the virtual complainant.
In his defence, Ali told the court that it was an accident and at no point in time did he intentionally commit the act.
The matter is scheduled for September 21.
