Eight outstanding citizens of Rose Hall Town with a combined service of 257 years to the development of Guyana were honored by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) on Wednesday last at the Area ‘H’ Ground.
The group was recognised by the club’s Farfan and Mendes Under-15, Gizmos and Gadgets Under-23 and Metro Female Cricket teams under the 2nd annual Milton Armogan Memorial Tribute to Heroes Programme which formed part of the club’s 20th anniversary celebration.
Club Secretary/CEO, Hilbert Foster, in delivering the feature address at the function stated that over the years, Guyanese tends to only recognise sportsmen, politicians, lawyers and other high profile individuals as heroes but the RHTY&SC strongly believes that it is the contribution of those who work silently with dedication in the background that contributes to our country’s development.
Foster, who refereed to the awardees ‘Silent Heroes’ noted that the RHTY&SC strongly believes that heroes must be honored in their lifetime and not when they pass away. The club over the last six years has honored 55 heroes in the township and was joined last year by New York based businessman Lynden Armogan who decided to sponsor the programme in memory of his late father, Milton Armogan – a former Member of Parliament, Commissioner of Oaths and community worker in Rose Hall Town.
The eight awardees were singled out for their years of service and for being positive role models to the dozens of cricketers that play for the RHTY&SC from the Under-13 to first division levels.
Foster reminded that it is very important for the members of the club especially the juniors to have role models to pattern their future after and challenged the Tribute to Heroes awardees to dedicate some time to sharing their experience with club members and other youths in the township.
Those honoured were Winston Hope (Politics and Community Development), Thomas Yansen (Mechanic and Culture), Denise Leow Babb (Community Development/and Catering), Pastor Kashwar Ramnauth (Education and Religion), Sundarie Rhobe (Seamstress), Paul Alexander (Security), Shirley Batson (Sanitation) and Joseph Torrezao (Education and Religion).
Pastor Ramnauth speaking on behalf of the awardees expressed gratitude to the club for making the event possible and for making the group feel special.
Ramnauth noted that he and his fellow awardees served the Township of Rose Hall with dedication and pride and were happy to have contributed towards the development of Guyana by extension.
Educator, Joseph Torrezao, who taught for 31 years, stated that it was with pride that he accepted the award and expressed feelings of being overjoyed to see how some of his former students have developed as members of the club.
Rose Hall Town Councilor Winston Hope who was honored for his role in community development expressed gratitude to the club and Lynden Armogan for recognising his contribution and wished the RHTY&SC success for another 20 years.
Representative of the sponsor Mr. Alain Ramnauth shared that Lynden Armogan was pleased to support the RHTY&SC as it is without doubt Guyana’s most dynamic organisation. He also offered congratulations to the awardees and urged them to use the occasion to recommit themselves towards playing a greater role in the development of Guyana. Each of the awardees received a Milton Armogan Memorial Tribute to Heroes Certificate and four special prizes.

RHTY&SC Cricket teams distribute $150,000 worth of school bags
The seven cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports (RHTY&SC) on Wednesday last started the distribution of $150,000 worth of school bags to members of the club and less fortunate students in the Lower Corentyne Area.
The members of the Farfan and Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19, Gizmos and Gadgets Under-23 and First Division and Metro Female Cricket teams organised the project as part of their personal development programme under which they are mandated by the club to make a positive difference in the lives of their peers.
Assistant Secretary/CEO of the club, Franklyn Ross, hailed the teams for working overtime to make the distribution of the school bags project a success. He challenged the young cricketers to expand their pro-education drive so that they can be able to reach less fortunate students.
Ross posited that the club would not accept in its membership any young person who does not have an interest in having a sound educational foundation stating that education and sports go hand in hand.
Secretary/CEO, Hilbert Foster informed that the distribution of the school bags worth was the cricket team’s contribution to the RHTY&SC 20th anniversary celebrations and praised the cricketers as positive role models who are assisting others to achieve their dreams.
Foster disclosed that over the last six years, the cricket team has undertaken 120 projects under their Personal Development Programme at the cost of $7M.
Vice captain of the RHT Pepsi Team, Loyden Lewis, speaking to his club mates and other youths urged them to stay in school and to strive always for excellence. Education, Lewis stated, is the only proven pathway to a successful future if it goes along with discipline and praised the management of the club for inspiring members to assist others.
Lewis expressed gratitude to Peter Lewis, Poonai Bhirooj, Bobby Prashad and Nadine Boodhoo for their contribution to the programme.
The players also donated a dozen school bags to the Berbice Cricket Board for distribution to less fortunate cricketers in the Ancient Country.
