The police must be free from political directives

Dear Editor,
The recent violence and senseless attack carried out on University of Guyana’s political scientist and Kaieteur News columnist, Mr Frederick Kissoon, outside Nigel’s Supermarket on the evening of June 5, 2010 should be strongly condemn by all Guyanese since it is totally unacceptable and unjustifiable in our society.
I wish to say that this attack on the life of Mr Kissoon this time has clearly shown that his attacker(s) had not been working independently but rather with direct orders given to them from top officials or close friends of a certain political party in this country.
Based on the information I gathered from the incident, it was rather strange to many of us that the government-owned television station, NCN, could have been the first and only TV station in Guyana to report and give evidence just minutes after the incident between Mr. Kissoon and his attacker on that afternoon of June 5, 2010.
Later that night National Communications Network NCN claimed to have known the perpetrator. It reported that the attack stemmed from an incident between Kissoon and the man’s daughter. NCN reported that Kissoon had made sexual advances to the man’s daughter.
This, according to the government-owned television station, angered the man who then attacked Kissoon.
Today, it is very questionable on how did this government-owned television station NCN know who the perpetrator was and the motive for Mr. Kissoon’s attack on that evening? The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Henry Greene, is being reluctant to start an investigation into the incident just show how much he is afraid of the PPP Government. However it is very impossible for those persons who work for the PPP Government at NCN television station in Georgetown to know why Mr. Kissoon was attacked on that evening if they were not directly involved in the incident.
The Police should have see this as a starting point for and speedily investigate the crime committed against Mr. Kissoon on Robb Street around 19:00 hours on the evening of June5, 2010.
However, it must not go unnoticed that there have been several attempts to silence University of Guyana’s political scientist and Kaieteur News columnist, Mr Frederick Kissoon.
These attempts caused local and foreign people to be more aware of the true dictatorial nature of the PPP in our society today and this is something we should all be concerned of today because we don’t know who will be the next critic of the PPP Government tomorrow to be either a victim of an attack or get killed in our society like the late political activist and journalist, Mr. Ronald Waddell.
Waddell was assassinated a few years ago for exposing mismanagement, and corruption in this country that has been in existence for the past eighteen years. It is a shame to see what our people have to go through in this country today under the PPP Government in this twenty-first century.
We had a change of Government in 1992 from good to bad and today we are seeing the worse of the worst under this PPP Government in Guyana we all have to pray and hope that it come to an end at next year’s election elections.
Finally, I strongly believe that if the Guyana Police Force today were an independent body like it was under the PNC Government and cares for the life of every citizen in this country today then an investigation would have started immediately into Mr. Kissoon’s affair to determine on how those persons who work for the PPP Government at NCN TV station in Georgetown knew the reason for his assault.
I don’t believe that Mr. Kissoon and other critics of the PPP Government that have suffered will never get justice in this country for the crime that committed against them in this country unless the Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, stop being afraid of the PPP Government and do his job independently.
