Search officials yesterday conducted another fly-over but again failed to locate trawler captain Delbert Williams. The captain went missing in the Waini area on Saturday after his fishing vessel exploded. Kaieteur News understands that the aerial search party went as far as the Venezuelan border.
The officials said that they plan to do another fly-over before the search is called off.
It was confirmed late Saturday evening, that a missing fish tub which was carrying Captain Delbert Williams when he was last seen, along with a lifeboat, were found.
Four crew members who were all injured when the trawler exploded had told Kaieteur News that the fire started from a live sparking wire in the engine room which came into contact with fuel.
Keith Adams, 20, and Orlon Munroe, 19, both of Cane Grove, and George Fitzpatrick, 40, of West Ruimveldt, were all injured when the trawler exploded. Munroe who received burns over 90 percent of his body is said to be in a critical condition in the Burns Care Unit.
Another crewmember, Elvis Todd, who suffered the least injuries, was discharged from the hospital.
Munroe had told this newspaper that they attempted to start the engine but a wire started to spark and then next thing, there was fire “all over”.
“I feel fire all over me body and me and the captain run out of the engine room. I jump overboard.”
Fitzpatrick said he was sleeping when he was awakened by the heat. About 25 per cent of his body was burnt. He said that he was able to put the badly injured captain in a tub used to store fish while he and Todd managed to grab on to the cover of the same tub.
Minister Robert Persaud had said that a full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire and to ensure that the industry does not suffer.
He assured that his Ministry will be moving to ensure that safety standards on fishing vessels are maintained and they are seaworthy.
