Dear Editor,
The lukewarm public reactions over the death of school boy, Kelvin Anthony Fraser, of Patentia, at the hands of the Guyana Police Force prove that we live in a society where some are more equal than some.
With the exception of Freddie Kissoon, Mark Benschop, Lincoln Lewis and Dr. David Hinds, Robert Corbin legal representation, and the auto-generated press statements, there was no outrage by other prominent public figures or organisation. Very few spoke out for Kelvin.
The West Coast Demerara police have earned a reputation for brutality as was seen with the torture of the teenager and now the death of Kelvin. Last November the Catholic Church, nuns, Red Thread, Bar Association, Khemraj Ramjattan, Raphael Trotman, Bernard Dos Santos S.C. and so many other organisations and prominent individuals were falling over each other to condemn the torture of the teenager. They also staged multiple street protests. It is hard to believe that the life of little Kelvin, just two years older than the tortured teenager, had no meaning. Or that his death would not have provided the desired political mileage so the outpouring of empathy and condemnation are lukewarm.
To the social butterflies, political opportunists, religious and non-governmental organisation justice can never be served and Guyana will never be a better place if you continue like this. The children need you, whether they are whole, urchins, tortured, molested or murdered. They didn’t ask to be born but since they are here every adult should be their guardian.
