Efforts are being made to modernize the cattle industry which will see the formation and revitalization of cattle associations to ensure the efficient utilization of pastures and other resources.
The Ministry’s National Dairy Development Programme, which will soon be renamed the Guyana Livestock Authority, has been meeting with all livestock farmers across the country that are engaged in pasture fed animals and to discuss ways of recognizing and enhancing their operation.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, yesterday, the NDDP is currently working closely with Zeelugt Cattle Farmers, who have been displaced due to the expanding Tuschen Housing Scheme. Through the intervention of the Ministry, new lands have been indentified and are about to be occupied.
In addition, the Leonora Cattle Pasture may be relocated due to increasing demands for educational and recreational facilities for youths within Leonora and surrounding communities. Dr. Dwight Walrond, Programme Director, NDDP and other senior staffers will be meeting with Members of the Leonora Cattle Farmers’ Association to discuss alternative pastures for those farmers. A meeting will be held in the Ministry of Agriculture’s Boardroom on Friday, the Ministry said yesterday in a statement on the changes to the cattle industry.
“The Ministry of Agriculture will continue to engage all Livestock Farmers/Associations to ensure their viability and discuss plans to further develop and diversify the sector. The cattle subsector has been identified as one of the new areas for special attention and the government will be spending in excess of US$4M under the Agriculture Diversification Project in this area.”
