Raymond Singh and Taffin Khan both amassed 6 1/2 points apiece and even after the application of the tie-breaker system, remained deadlocked, eventually agreeing to share the honours when the curtains came down on the Topco Juice Chess Tournament at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street Georgetown, Sunday evening last.
Such phenomenal situations have occurred before and in such instances, a playoff is required to determine the eventual winner. However, Singh was scheduled to travel overseas mere hours later and both players took a man’s stance and eventually agreed in principle to share the honours.
Taffin’s father David returned from a lengthy absence from the podium to chalk up 5 points and close off the premiere spots. His two loses were at the hands of former champions of this tournament, Raymond Singh and his son, Taffin.
The other points standing are Learie Webster, Errol Tiwari and Shiv Nandalall (4 points apiece), Michael Pereira and Shazeeda Rahim (3 points each), Alex Joseph and Ryan Singh (2 points apiece) while Ronald Roberts ended in the cellar on one point.
The close finish in the senior category was replicated in the juniors when Saeed Ali and Sham Khan both ended on six points and officials had to resort to the tiebreaker system to set them apart. In the end, Ali prevailed.
Khalid Gajraj was the next best player, finishing on 4 1/2 points and occupied the final podium spot. The other point standings are Rashad Hussain (3 1/2), Cecil Cox and Kana Khan (3 points each), Devendra Singh (2 points) and Videsh Shameer (1 point). Demerara Distillers Ltd exclusively sponsored the tournament under the Topco Juice Brand.
