Current Caribbean Under-13 Female Singles Champion, Chelsea Edghill outclassed Jamaali Holder in straight sets to win the U-13 title in the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Independence Table Tennis tournament yesterday.
Edghill defeated Holder 11-7, 11-5 and 11-7 to win her first title of the competition after she had beaten Anna Joao 11-0, 11-3 and 11-5 in the semi-final. Holder reached the final with an 11-5, 11-3 and 11-6 victory against Giovanna Alga.
Joao then thrashed Alga 11-5, 11-4 and 11-4 to win third place in the U-13 female category of the National Sports Commission-sponsored event.
Edghill will also contest the Girls’ U-15 Final today after she defeated Olivia Weekes 11-5, 11-3 and 11-15 yesterday. She will play Akecia Nedd, who also impressively won in straight sets 11-9, 11-6 and 11-8 against Homer to reach the final.
In the Under-10 Boys’ Final, Jeremy Singh, who is the son of former national player and now coach, Lisa Lewis, fought his way to an 11-8, 8-11, 12-10 and 11-7 victory over national cadets’ player, Amit Mookram.
Nevach Clarkson won two titles in the U-8 and U-10 categories, beating Shawana Douglas 11-3, 10-12 and 11-13 in the U-8 and Sanasha Corlette and Douglas in a round robin playoff to snatch the U-10 title.
The tournament will continue today when Elishaba Johnson takes on Ryan Narine in one of the Boys Under-13 semi-final while Joseph Johnson and Kyle Edghill battle in the other semi to determine the two finalists.
The U-15 boys and girls semi will also be played today.
