A five-year-old girl was admitted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, Best Village, yesterday, after teachers at the nursery school which the child attends, found marks of violence on her body.
According to a source, a teacher saw that the child had marks on her body and confronted the child. Upon closer examination, several severe abrasions were found.
“She has a brand around her foot… the child said it was barbed wire. She has a cut on her hand and she said a boy (name given) cut her with a knife and a girl (name given) would take her clothes off and beat her with a belt.”
It was said that a 13-year-old the girl whose name was mentioned as being one of the perpetrators, confessed to the Police that she, together with her father and mother, would beat the girl when she misbehaves.
According to the source, the child is being taken care of by foster parents since her real parents are incapable of doing so.
It was revealed that the child’s parents are separated and the mother has four children, while the father works in the interior.
The source further said that the abused child came to the nursery in March following a transfer, and begun the term in April, however, she would seldom attend school. Consequently, the guardians were sent for but never turned up, only the thirteen-year-old girl would come to collect the child.
It was further revealed that the most recent beating was administered to the five-year-old after she took away a “shak shak” from her foster mother’s child.
The vicious assault reportedly escalated after the foster father came home, with the 13-year-old joining the older pair in the act.
The source explained that the 13-year-old girl who is a school dropout is in custody at La Grange Police Station. The guardians were placed on station bail after being in custody.
The abused child’s mother was taken to the Ministry of Human Services earlier in the year after relatives claimed that she was being neglected.
