– Flight of Hope promises more contributions
Region Nine women’s football team were presented with the samples of gear, which they are expected to receive from Flights of Hope yesterday during the halftime period of their second Women’s Inter-Association Football match.
Flights of Hope Executive, Praimnauth Mohanlall (centre, left) hands over the samples of gear to Region Nine’s Women Football Manager, Brian Rodrigues while Flights of Hope founder, Orlando Charles (second left, centre), other officials and Region Nine’s Women Football team share the moment.
Flights of Hope, which is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), presented the items that included shin-guards, socks and balls to the manager of the Region Nine team, Brian Rodrigues at the Georgetown Football Club ground.
Founder of the NGO that was officially launched last year, Orlando Charles told Kaieteur Sport that the contributions came as a result of personally experiencing the hardships of a youth growing up in Essequibo, an indigenous community.
“As a result of growing up in Essequibo, I know what it is to not have things how you are suppose to have it, so basically this is a volunteerism programme, where we would like to help every hinterland community,” Charles indicated.
He said that the initiative is not only confined to sport gears but also medical supplies and stationary for schools etc. He said that member of the NGO, Praimnauth Mohanlall is one of the individuals that have made “significant contributions”.
“For the time being, Mr. Mohanlall, who himself is a part of the programme, has donated an airplane to Flight of Hope and I am very happy that he is a part of us and he support us greatly,” the trained pilot told this newspaper yesterday.
He said that the contribution is to help in the development of sport. “We have been doing a lot of work in South Rupununi, especially Sand Creek, which is way from Lethem, it is about 300 plus miles away from Lethem,” Charles continued.
The founder of Flight of Hope said that their mission is to give children with little hope a reason to be happy. He said that they are doing that using the air, which is, when coined a reason for the name of the budding locally-based organisation.
