Through its Bank of Nova Scotia Tribute to Teachers Programme
Eight outstanding Educators in the Lower Corentyne area were recognised for their sterling contributions on Thursday last by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) under its annual Bank of Nova Scotia Tribute of Teachers programme.
The programme was organised by the Club’s Pepsi Under-19, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-13 and Metro Female Cricket teams and was the second of its kind to honour teachers who were selected by their peers as Teachers of the Year for 2009.
Those honoured were Phoebe Hazel of Belvedere Primary, Brenda Hunte of Rose Hall Town Nursery, Yolet Kingston of Ankerville Nursery, Paul Perreira of Rose Hall Town Primary, Nermala Sewdat of Port Mourant Secondary, Imran Ally of Lower Corentyne Secondary, Deborah Tombran of JC Chandisingh Secondary and Basant Singh Persaud of Corentyne Secondary.
Personal Banking Officer of Scotia Bank, New Amsterdam Branch, Ms. Marcelle Brown in her remarks stated that the Bank was happy to be a part of a programme that honours teachers.
She noted that success always comes from constant hard work and that the Bank since its formation in 1832 has always shown commitment to excellence.
The Bank she stated strongly believed in giving back to the community in which it operates and takes its responsibility of a corporate body very serious.
RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster hailed the awardees as true heroes of the education system who are dedicated role models despite working sometimes in a hostile environment.
Foster recalled his days attending Secondary school when his classmates lived in awe of their teachers and respected them for the role they were playing in empowering them. He challenged the teachers to uphold the high standards and to always strive for excellence.
The long serving Sports Administrator also challenged the educators to place special emphasis on the social ills affecting youths and to guide them away from drugs, teenage sex and crime.
He also expressed gratitude to them for the role they play in educating the dozens of Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club members attending school as it makes the club’s work easier when its membership is educated and disciplined.
Ms. Nermala Sewdat, a senior member of the Club’s female section was also congratulated for being selected as the Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Imran Ally, speaking on behalf of the awardees expressed profound gratitude for being honoured noting that the recognition would inspire the awardees to greater heights.
The Lower Corentyne Secondary School ‘Teacher of the Year’ told his fellow awardees that they have major roles in molding the minds of youths and it is a privilege that they should be proud of. Ally expressed gratitude to the RHTY&SC and Scotia Bank for sponsoring the event and stated that more emphasis should be placed on recognising the roles educators play in Guyana.
The awardees were selected based on personal attitude, discipline, attendance, relationship with other staff, involvement in sporting activities, role model status, students’ performances and their ability to work beyond the call of duty.
Each of the awardees received two gifts and a Certificate of Excellence.
