All parties should be respectful at our ports of entry

In the Peeping Tom column of May 8, 2010, the columnist presented a view of Guyana from the Diaspora perspective. Noteworthy is the mention that the “attitudes of immigration and customs staff are far friendlier and professional but still somewhat intimidating”.
On the other side of the coin is the lack of respect for authority that GRA officers and other public servants have to endure from visitors who “would dare not argue back to an official at JFK or Heathrow airports”.
It is very commendable that persons are taking note of our improvements, especially of our human resources. GRA staffers must continue to display a high level of professionalism, and be vigilant of persons that may want to entice them and jeopardize the integrity of GRA.
While courtesy and professionalism should be displayed at our ports of entry, mutual respect should exist between all parties involved.
