Dear Editor,
It is appalling that a top official at the University of Guyana (UG) is attempting to block Professor Brij Tiwarie from conducting and participating in the Faculty Election for its Dean.
The Acts and Statutes of the University clearly outline the necessary qualifications of a candidate for the position of Dean.
The said UG official only after the election results is supposed to appoint the Dean of each Faculty on the recommendation of the Board of the said Faculty from those eligible to hold the position. In addition to this, the Acts and Statues specified that Professors and Senior lecturers within the Faculty are eligible for this position and can participate in the election. The official does not determine who takes part in the election.
Professor Brij Tiwarie has all the relevant qualifications to hold the office of Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. As a matter of fact he is the last serving Dean. Where is the harm in him running for this office? How does the official justify his attempt to block Professor Tiwarie from participating in the elections? Amanda Totaram
