Mohamed Hassan is still bedridden one month after being struck down
– accused fined $25,000
One month after he was struck down by a pickup while going to work, Mohamed Hassan is still bedridden, his motorbike is wrecked, and he has to hire an ambulance to take him from his home to hospital for his checkups.
And he’s furious that the driver who caused his misfortune got off with a small fine.
Hassan, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was heading to work at around 14: 45 hrs on March 26, when the driver of a pickup who was coming in the opposite direction slammed into him.
He was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) with a fractured right leg and broken hip. His motorcycle was also wrecked.
Mr. Hassan was discharged from hospital on April 4, but was told that he had to remain in bed for a further nine months.
Meanwhile, the accused driver appeared in court and was fined $25,000 for dangerous driving.
Mr. Hassan and his wife said that the police ranks failed to inform the court about his injuries and about the damage to his motorcycle.
“There was nothing (in court) about what the dangerous driving caused; nothing about me being bedridden for nine months.”
Mr. Hassan’s wife has had to go on leave to take care of her bedridden husband. Whenever he needs to have a check-up, he has to spend $4,000 to hire an ambulance to the GPHC.
A police official who investigated the case told Kaieteur News that Mr. Hassan would have to take legal action against the driver if he hopes to be compensated.
Mr. Hassan said he intends to do just that.
