A team of rice officials has successfully negotiated a rice deal in Venezuela that will see more money being offered for shipments from Guyana.
The deal is a follow-up from ongoing negotiations between the two countries, according to Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud.
Last year, Guyana managed to sign off on a landmark deal with Venezuela for an estimated 50,000 tonnes – including 40,000 tonnes of paddy and the rest in white rice.
However, the shipments ran into hurdles after difficulties in finding a vessel and stringent demands on import requirements to that country.
So far, 4,000 tonnes has already left Guyana.
Government has long been tapping the Caribbean region as a major market with expansions being called for in the Colombian market as well.
The Guyana/Venezuela deal will see this country earning US$18.8M.
