An entertaining 65 from Nigel Bissu, a well constructed 60 from Alfred Mentore and a good all-round performance from skipper Rohan Sarjoo spearheaded the East Bank Cricket Association (EBCA) to a 67-run victory against the Trophy Stall Media in a feature 20/20 cricket match at the Police ground yesterday.
Invited to bat on a good batting track in sunny conditions, EBCA rattled up 195 off their allotted 20 overs with the left-handed Bissu and Mentore, a former Guyana youth batsman who is now a member of the EBCA, sharing in a half-century century partnership after the pugnacious Sarjoo, a former Guyana opener, had given his team an explosive start by taking 26 runs off the first two overs bowled pacer Calvin Roberts.
Roberts who took the first two wickets off consecutive deliveries, finished with 3-33 from 3 overs.
The best bowler for the Media team was Skipper Sean Devers who finished with 2-24 from 3 overs and fellow off-spinner Linden Wilson who took 2-29 including the wicket of Sarjoo.
Over 10 catches were dropped by the Media side in a ragged fielding display and a skier high to cover by Devers to let off Mentore off Kezan Brummell and a dropped offering on the square-leg boundary by Ravendra Madholall to let off National fast bowling selectee Trevor Benn off Barath Mangru before he had scored were followed by boundaries by the batsmen.
Brummell, a former Guyana under-15 player, bowled his left-am seam with beautiful control and once the Media team can work on their fielding and fitness, they should be a side to be reckoned with.
The East Bank batsmen were allowed to score freely and although Devers conceded just 6 runs from his last 2 overs and took 2 wickets at the death and Brummell supported well in his last spell in the closing stages, the large number of dropped catches ensured EBCA fell just 5 short of a 200 target.
The Media team were off the a solid start with Guyana Times’ Madholall and NCN’ John Ramsingh sharing in a half-century partnership before the right-handed Ramsingh was forced to retire 31 due to tiredness.
Madholall, a former Essequibo under-19 batsman, looked very organized and his innings included a towering straight six and the openers nullified the new ball pair of Benn and Andrew Allen.
A spanking square-cut which reached the backward point boundary like a bullet from Ramsingh off Benn, brought the small but vocal crowd to life.
After Madholall was stumped off Sarjoo for 45 and former Essequibo youth player and Essequibo’s RCA 8 TV employee Brandon Cabose skied a catch to long-off, the innings went into decline as only Linden Wilson (15) of the other batsmen got into double figures.
Sarjoo was named Man-of-the-Match for his cameo 29 and 4-17 with his off-spin while the EBCA collected the beautiful Trophy Stall trophy.
The Dyna’s Media tapeball team is expected to go into action on Monday night under light at the Banks DIH ground from 19:00hrs against a CID Headquarters X1.
The Devers-led Media Tapeball team, which includes most of their hardball players, will be hoping to secure their second consecutive win at Thirst Park after their victory against Western Union.
Dyna’s has provided the Media team with yellow Polo shirts and Caps for their 20 man-squad.
