GBTI commenced its fourth annual Inter-Secondary School Impromptu Speech Competition at the GBTI Recreational Centre, Bel Air Park Tuesday.
Sixteen schools are participating in this year’s event. The opening match-up on Tuesday was between St. Stanislaus College and Central High School
The schedule for the rest of the first round is as follows: Today (Thursday 22 April) from 15:30hrs – President’s College vs. Marian Academy, followed by Bishops’ High School vs. St. Rose’s High School; (Tuesday April 27 – 15:30hrs) Annandale Secondary School vs. St. Joseph High School and Mae’s Secondary vs Cummings Lodge Secondary School; (Thursday April 29 – 15:30hrs) Queen’s College vs School of the Nations and St. John’s College vs Christ Church Secondary School, and (Tuesday May 4 – 15:30hrs) Richard Ishmael Secondary School vs Institute of Business Education.
Round two will be held on Thursday, May 6, and Tuesday, May 11, while the semi finals are to be contested on Thursday May 13. All three days the rivalry will begin at 15:30hrs. The final is slated for Tuesday, May 18 from 15:00hrs.
Acting Chief Education Officer, Melcita Bovell, who addressed the gathering on Tuesday, emphasized that proper communication and the ability to use the art of public speaking to get across ideas and thoughts is not only vital in Impromptu Speaking but in garnering the knowledge and capability to structure thoughts to be expressive daily.
She noted that pronunciation, enunciation, posture, gesture, quick thinking, and expression are essential for an impromptu orator.
The Education Officer said that communication is the single most important skill needed in today’s world.
She added that there are many topics that have to be studied, and everyone is a winner since the knowledge garnered will assist in the development of the scope of understanding through life.
According to GBTI Chief Executive Officer, John Tracey, students and teachers through dedication can strive for the best through perspiration, perseverance and research, since constant development enhances any skills cultivated, especially impromptu speaking.
