Apr 04, 2010 Letters
Dear Editor,
Please allow me to respond to a letter by Rev. Gideon Cecil, titled “Noise nuisance in our society.” This letter appeared in the December 28, 2009 issue of Kaieteur News.
“The thing from which the world suffers now, more than from any other evil is not the assertion of falsehood, but the endless and irrepressible repetition of half-truths” G.K. Chesterton
The title of Reverend does not give one a moral, judicial and or journalistic licence to handout justice or impose one’s higher sense of morality on others.
In his letter, the good Reverend appointed himself as the prosecutor, jury and judge over a small business that was conceived and developed with the community of Enterprise in mind. His Christmas Day visit to Enterprise and a stroll past the Playland Restaurant, or the biased assertions of relatives, do not make a case for such malicious accusations.
The Reverend’s fact finding “walk down the street” and the very high level of consultation with relatives do not prove that music is “played night and day” (half truth). Or that the big movie screen is evidence that pornography is shown here (an out right lie). A quick check with the police station for the district, as to how many “reports” they have received, will prove that the good Reverend did not do his home work correctly. To say that the police and high officials were paid bribes is ridiculous and libelous. Come now Reverend Gideon Cecil, you surely are stretching the Cloth.
My dear Reverend, for the record, on Christmas Day in the community of Enterprise/Non Pariel there were more that six music boxes going at the same time. Playland’s music boxes are babies compared to the others. Also, if you had done a quick check with the police, you would have been surprised to find that there were no noise complaints, for this district, on record.
Here is a little something for you to file away for future reference. Enterprise/Non Pariel is a very closely-knit community. We pride ourselves with being hardworking, neighbourly, patriotic and civic minded citizens and we do not take kindly to outsiders telling us how to conduct ourselves.
We take care of our young, our elderly, our less fortunate, our schools and churches, our departed, etc. In short we take care of our own.
You have taken upon yourself to attack one of our more respected establishment and its proprietors. Playland is non-alcoholic, non-smoking and is neighbours to a Hindu Pundit and a recently departed Pentecostal Minister. It is located obliquely across from a Hindu Temple. We are yet to hear of a single complaint by any of them.
To you my dear Reverend I extend an open invitation, at our expense. Come visit our humble establishment and witness for yourself, what Playland is all about. This place was created with our kids in mind.
Everything we do here is for the family. We will never disrespect them.
James Fenimore Cooper once said. “It is the besetting vice of democracies to substitute public opinion for law. This is the usual form in which the masses of men exhibit their tyranny.”
