Dear Editor,
Frederick Kissoon, like other regular columnists and letter writers, plays an important part in helping the country to run better. His column, “Is the law in Guyana a jackass” (Kaieteur News, 19-03-10) is a case in point where he denoted the gross inefficiency of the court system that can drag out cases interminably to a point of being almost on an unstoppable treadmill.
I appreciate his reminding of Mr. Rex Mc Kay’s court case and the returning Guyanese land issue, and trust that these cases would be resolved soon. And I do hope and pray that something could be done quickly to make the court system efficient and fair for all Guyanese.
The crux of Mr. Kissoon’s column that day was to underscore his disgust of “a nation where central government shows continuous contempt for the rule of law…” One cannot help, however, but notice the outright hypocrisy of the writer. How much respect does Mr. Kissoon have for the rule of law in Guyana? Wasn’t it Mr. Kissoon who barged into the compound of Wales Estate by virtue of him being a public figure and ignoring the security guard at hand a few weeks ago?
Isn’t this the same Mr. Kissoon who repeatedly denounced Minister Benn for his ‘strong’ hand in dismantling the Kissing Bridge on the West Coast Demerara and similar illegal structures which have been on important public government property? Wasn’t it Mr. Kissoon who vehemently chastised the Government for dismissing a (GDF?) public servant who took a lengthy leave of absence without the express authority of his superiors?
What part is the columnist playing in contributing to anarchy in this country with his contempt for the rule of law?
