Region Two chairman, Alli Baksh, has said that there is a bright future ahead for the coconut industry in the Pomeroon. His comments came at the recent Regional Democratic Council (RDC) statutory.
Mr. Baksh said, in an invited comment, later, that a company from India has purchased a large coconut estate in the lower Pomeroon River and will be setting up several other industries that will aid in the manufacture of coconut-based products.
According to the chairman, the prices for dried coconuts have increase as well as the demand for the product on both the local and international area.
Mr. Baksh said that the present coconut farmers are not enjoying good prices and are looking forward to new developments in the industry.
Farmers are very thankful to the government for providing excavators to desilt clogged drainage canals in their coconut estates.
The desilted canals have led to the rehabilitation of hundreds of coconut estates that were left abandoned for many years.
The Alfro Alphonso Group of companies has also contributed significantly to the revival of the Pomeroon coconut industry. The companies have built the Pomeroon Oil Mill which produces the “Golden Brook Vegetable oil” from Pomeroon coconuts.
