It was supposed to be a fun-filled day but it ended tragically with the death of 21-year old Richard Ramnarine of 89 Gopie Street, Buxton, East Coast Demerara.
The young man drowned in the Laluni Creek yesterday, leaving his four months pregnant reputed wife, Melissa Chand, and other relatives in a state of despair.
Ramnarine was part of a group from the East Coast of Demerara that had travelled to Laluni on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway to engage residents there in two games of cricket.
The group comprised both male and female cricket teams.
Following the games, the group decided to take a dip in the Laluni Creek before returning to their destination.
However, when it was time to board the bus for home, it was observed that Ramnarine was not among the group.
A frantic search was launched but the young cricketer was nowhere around.
The group then decided to check in the creek and after a few minutes they came up with the mason/carpenter’s lifeless body.
There are reports that Ramnarine was drinking before he decided to take the fateful dip in the creek.
At his home last evening, his reputed wife and other relatives were inconsolable.
A relative said that all they knew was that he left yesterday morning to play cricket.
They did not know where the match was being played but they received a telephone call informing them that Ramnarine was dead.
Ramnarine was described by both relatives and friends as a very good cricketer.
Apart from his pregnant reputed wife, the young man leaves to mourn his mother and three siblings.
The body was transported to a city mortuary yesterday and is awaiting a post mortem examination.
