Dear Editor,
The Ministry of Agriculture is once again not surprised by the PNCR’s recent statement commenting on the Ministry’s El Nino response and drainage and irrigation works within Pomeroon, by spreading misinformation as outlined in a Press Statement dated March 12, 2010.
It is not strange that the PNCR choose to neglect the development of Pomeroon under this government as the community was once pauperized and bartering coconuts for food. However, it is under this administration that the farmers of Pomeroon are exporting tones of fresh and processed agricultural produce to the Caribbean and overseas.
Just for the benefit for the PNCR, the Ministry of Agriculture has always been supportive to the development of Pomeroon. Only recently, on March 10, 2010 a team from the Ministry of Agriculture, including senior technical officers, visited the Hackney and other communities within the river to listen to the concerns of farmers/residents and to address issues relating to El Nino, amongst others.
One of their major concerns was the lack of potable water. To this end, the Ministry of Agriculture sourced 13 water tanks which were distributed to residents on March 11, 2010. Additionally, farmers/residents were informed that the Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with the Guyana Water Inc. to dig shallow wells in El Nino affected areas and that the Hackney community was one such community identified.
In relation to the Hackney Canal, works had commenced late last year and will recommence shortly. Only recently, for the first time under this government, the Ministry of Agriculture deployed three excavators working continuously in the Pomeroon undertaking critical drainage works to increase drainage capacity and open new waterways. The Ministry’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority has undertaken critical works totaling $11 million within the Try Best area and the installation of three tubes and revetment at Manikuru.
Further, farmers of Pomeroon have been benefitting from support in the area of marketing of agricultural produce the Ministry’s New Guyana Marketing Corporation is continuously working with farmers/exporters to source markets for their products which are evident in the exportation of large quantities coconuts; copra, coconut water and other fresh and processed products regionally and further afield.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture will continue to engage constructive stakeholders and will not be distracted by the opposition and stay focus on addressing concerns of farmers to make investments in the agriculture sector which is today growing at an unprecedented rate.
