Dear Editor,
I refer to a letter written by Cheddi Joey Jagan Jr., published in Kaieteur News on 11 March, 2010, in response to a letter I wrote, which was published on 10 March.
I am absolutely appalled that a person who has sat as a Member of Parliament and considers himself a public commentator of some seriousness would suggest that my father, Ralph Ramkarran, should “take the lead, as a big lawyer at Cameron and Shepherd, to move a constitutional amendment to the courts deleting overseas voting from the constitution, since he is the one who brought it up in the first place”.
No lawyer, no matter how big he is, can move for a constitutional amendment through the Court. What would he say? The Constitution is unconstitutional? Such a concept does not exist!
I find it difficult to understand how a Member of Parliament, whether sitting or former, does not know how amendments to the Constitution are made. Just as a hint to Joey, my father can’t move the amendment as Speaker either.
