Taffin Khan captures Topco Juice Mash Chess Tournament
– Saeed Ali takes junior category
Taffin Khan chalked up 6 points, eking out a victory after an extremely competitive tournament when the curtains came down on the Topco Juice Mash Chess Tournament at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street Sunday evening last.
Several other players were bundled together at 5 1/2 points but it was Shiv Nandalall who eventually earned the second spot after the tie breaker system was employed. Wendell Meusa and Michael Pereira finished in the third and fourth slot, respectively.

After several rounds of keen rivalry, the champion was only decided in the final round after five players started that round separated by only half of a point. Michael Pereira needed only half of a point in this round to secure his first major but faltered at this stage after dropping the crucial game to Frankie Farley.
This was his second loss in the tournament, his first coming against the eventual tournament winner, Taffin Khan in round six. Khan enjoyed a successful weekend, defeating Kenrick Braithwaite in round five, Michael Pereira in round six, national champion Wendell Muesa in round seven and veteran player Errol Tiwari in the final round. It was really not Meusa’s day as he conceded a draw to Shiv Nandalall while Tiwari played an aggressive game to eventually overcome David Khan.
The final points standing reads: Wendell Meusa and Michael Pereira (5 1/2), David Khan (5), Errol Tiwari and Ronald Roberts (4 1/2), Kenrick Brathwaite and Parbat Haatram (4), Frankie Farley (3 1/2), Carlos Allicock and Ryan Singh (3) and Nowrattan Persaud (2).
In the junior category, Saeed Ali relinquished the lead briefly after suffering a loss to Raan Motilall in round five. His redemption came after Raan Motilall suffered back to back losses to Devendra Singh and Rashad Hussain respectively.
In the meantime, Ali held on to a one point lead to secure his first tournament of the year.
The final points standing reads: Saeed Ali (6 1/2), Rashad Hussain (5 1/2), Sham Khan, Raan Motilall, Devendra Singh, Ron Motilall, Kana Khan and Sheriffa Ali (5 points apiece), Mandy Ramnarine and Cecil Cox (4 1/2 each), Ganesh Persaud, Miranda Ramnarine and Carlos Petterson (4) and Faraad Baksh in the cellar on 3 points.
The beginners’ category saw little Vashti Ramnarine taking the prime podium position with Viddesh Shameer finishing second and Daryll Calistro third. Monesh Gopie and Sandip Gonsalves occupied the two other positions.
Ron Motilall was adjudged the most improved player in the junior category while Saeed Ali, by dint of his performance will receive one year free supply of Topco Juice courtesy of main sponsor, DDL.
