Dear Editor,
With regards to forest preservation and the Government’s proposed LCDS, one does not have to be a supporter of the Government to applaud efforts to preserve our rain forests.
Protection of the forests and indeed the entire natural habitat (flora and fauna, waterfalls, rivers, etc.) of the country should be applauded. And individually and collectively, Guyanese abroad should seek to lobby for funds for the Government’s efforts to protect our environment and promote sustainable development.
It does not appear there will be an international climate change agreement soon which means Guyana is not likely to be a beneficiary of development funds immediately.
The fact remains, however, that the globe is threatened by rapid changes in climate patterns. One need only look at what is happening in the US (with some areas getting tons of snow while other areas are facing drought) and the Caribbean facing severe drought and water rationing. Other regions and countries are also experiencing climate troubles impacting heavily on their economies.
In fact, a news report says two major icebergs in the Antarctic area are on a collision course and once they impact, there will be a reduction in oxygen in the water threatening all sea life. This could mean a reduction in fish in the Pacific area and perhaps beyond.
Climate experts say the globe is experiencing troubling climatic patterns because of the failure of governments and people to properly care for the environment. There is not enough conservation of the environment, forests in particular. The Guyana Government has made a genuine effort to care for the forests that can greatly help to reduce the impact of climate change on our country and by extension the region and the globe. Our forests, as well as the plant sea defence (mangrove) growing on the shores, are able to accumulate carbon dioxide which can reduce green house effect, the main culprit responsible for climate change (global warming).
Guyana needs international assistance to fund the programme for the conservation and sustainable development of our forest to reduce the climate change impacts. Each one of us needs to play our part in helping to procure funds to protect the environment.
