Dear Editor,
There was a notice in the newspapers this past week asking all customers of Guyana Power & Light Inc (GPL) to honour all outstanding monies owed to the company over the past years. According to the notice, failure to do so will result in disconnection. However, what happens if a customer is awaiting a ruling by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) concerning an outstanding balance?
I have filed a complaint with the PUC nearly three years ago. GPL, through the PUC, has requested receipts, copies of this and copies of that, which I have produced to the PUC over the past three years, but up to this point, there has been no closure on my matter.
All GPL has to do, through the PUC, is to review an estimated billing amount that has been recurring on my monthly bill for the past three years (after looking at the papers I sent in to the PUC) and issue a pay order to which I am expected to honour.
I would really like the GPL, through the PUC, to make a decision about my complaint so that this matter can be closed. The last contact I made with the Utilities Commission resulted in the Commission stating that they have done all that they are supposed to do and they are now awaiting a decision from the power company, to date which they have not made.
