Guyana’s second shipment of aid to Haiti worth $45 M left port Georgetown yesterday, in 11 containers.
This shipment which is scheduled to arrive in the earthquake shatter island within another 14 days, left the John Fernandes Wharf late yesterday afternoon.
This shipment includes two containers stocked with 1,650 bags of rice which the committee purchased as well as one container of Banks DIH biscuits, another of food supplies from the Edward Beharry Group of Companies, food supplies and water representing from Banks DIH, 100 cases from Jus Water, three containers from DDL and one container from IPA.
Head of Civil Defence Commission Lt. Col Chabilall Ramsarup told media operatives that the ship will first dock in Trinidad and then to Jamaica before the final destination in Haiti.
Lt Col Ramsarup said that unlike the days immediately after the earthquake, it is now easier to get aid to the affected areas in Haiti. He explained that now most of the streets are cleared of rubble and thus it is easier to get aid in and around Haiti.
The shipment from Guyana is going to be handled by the Caricom contingent on the island.
Marketing Director, Bernie Fernandes, disclosed that the cargo, which costs John Fernandes about US$200 per container, is expected to reach its destination by February 14.
Fernandes explained that Seaboard freight will have to stop in Trinidad where the supplies will be loaded unto another ship which is more compatible with the stage port in Haiti.
The first shipment of aid left Guyana last week
Last week in excess of $12.79 million in relief supplies packed in four containers left Guyana’s shores for the survivors of Caricom sister state, Haiti.
Guyana Haiti Relief Committee Chairperson Minister Priya Manickchand had said the first shipment of supplies from Guyana to Haiti include one container with 500 bags of flour of which 400 were purchased by the committee and 100 amassed from donations.
It also included $8M worth of Pharmaceuticals from the New GPC and 78 cases of refined oil valued at $500,000 from the Pomeroon Oil Mills. There were 1,600 five-gallon bottles of water in two containers as well as an unspecified amount of used clothing.
The Guyana Haiti relief effort fund as at Tuesday was $258M in cash at the banks and more than $45M in items donations.
