Dear Editor,
The year 2009 is history, a new year has begun. As we reflect on past accomplishments as well as disappointments, we must always be thankful for life in itself; because it is a precious gem which is the greatest privilege given unto us from the creator.
One thing struck me, the devastation of Haiti by the earthquake; never in my life would I have believed that there could be such enormous human suffering, yet with my naked eyes like millions around the world scene of hopelessness, suffering and pain are constantly shown.
My heart goes out to the people of Haiti, it is my sincere hope, that with resilience you will rise from the dust that have engulfed your nation at this time
Sometimes when such tragedy befalls us we tend to question ourselves, but one lesson we can learn from these most unfortunate events is we all are vulnerable to natural disaster.
Out of these sad stories one thing struck me – the out pouring of humanity with humility, all across the globe, and this is what is needed throughout the world, love, compassion and tolerance for each other.
We must not only wait on a tragedy to happen, but must extend our love all the time.
Not too long ago I was on my way to work, I saw two little children with bags and cast net, I took a closer look to make certain that their safety were intact, when I inquired if any elder were with them they said their father; out of curiosity I went over to speak with their father.
Lo and behold the gentleman wore a poignant face, as I approach him I said good morning sir you are rather early and the kids are helping out, his words to me were “wa me gon do ma get lil rice but nothin to go with it, life a hard look me get five picney and no wuk, job real hard to get bare suffrin for awe poor people”.
This is just one out of thousands untold stories of the suffering our people go through right here in Guyana, and it seems like there is no end to this nightmare, more and more of our people cannot survive on this present system of greed.
Communities all across Guyana are hoping the 2010 will bring good fortune, in reality the condition is not propitious and will be like this until people make changes that can effect positive results.
Guyana, as even the smallest child knows have a promising future, with all the natural resources and excellent human resources to complement our drive for growth and national development, but we have to stop the greed and have an equitable distribution of all resources to the benefits of all our people.
It is my sincere hope that we all will wake up from our slumber and send a loud and clear message that we cannot continue on this indistinct path.
Andre Fortune
