Dear Editor,
The following are suggestion, which for years now, I wanted to make public, for comments, from a wide cross section, as regards to a new Traffic Road Design arrangement, within the Georgetown/Greater Georgetown area, which I know will prevent accidents and save many lives.
I propose the following: –
Plan A – We make all the East to West roads ‘Major Roads’, which run between Water Street and Sophia West Rd. and between the Sea Wall Road and Sussex St, (As we know, a major road is not a stop sign, but the entire length of the road, where all traffic crossing them must first stop)
All traffic, travelling from North or South must stop before crossing these Major Roads, which roads run from East or West
The only Major Roads running from North or South would be Water St, High St., Main St, and name changes going south to Sussex St., Camp St., Irving St. Vlissengen Rd., possibly Shell Rd. Kitty, Sheriff St and Sophia. West Boundary Rd, known as the Eastern Highway.
Where there are two Major Roads crossing each other, and where there are no traffic lights, or the traffic lights are not working, the rule was and always is, that both vehicles must stop and the one which stops first, is the one which goes first.
Where there are schools etc, along a Major Road, signs must be put up, while most of them already have “Speed Bumps”
This arrangement, I am suggesting will take an enormous stress from the driver, who would no longer have to look for a traffic sign, or a marking on the Road to see if he or she has to stop, as the entire public would know that they have to stop, before crossing any East to West Road.
There are roads especially in the Queenstown area, where along one road, going north or south, you have to stop at the crossing with another road, then as you continue along the same road, you do not have to stop at the next crossing, where the other motorist has to stop, and it goes on and on like that.
There are no words to describe this arrangement, only to say that it is fraught with danger, especially where there are no Stop Signs or visible Road Markings.
As I said, with my suggested arrangement, a driver would know exactly when he or she has to stop, without having to look for any sign or markings on the road.
Plan B – We could make all the North to South roads as “Major Roads”, but we would have the same situation of having to cross very wide roads, that because of their heavy traffic, could also be considered as a Major Road, like Lamaha St., Middle St., Church St, Regent St, Brickdam etc.
So I think Plan A would be the better way to go.
I make myself available, to discuss this further, and if it is approved, we would consider making a small monetary contribution to get it started, since other than changing some road signs, it would be necessary to do some publications, at least half page ads in the newspapers to sensitize the public/drivers of this change.
I believe that my suggestion will be of tremendous help to all drivers, and would help in reducing accidents and saving lives.
