Dear Editor,
Normal classes were disturbed at Annandale Secondary School last Friday (15-01-10) due to flea invasion. At around 09:30hrs, students of the institution complained of being bitten by what they assumed to be fleas.
Classes were relocated to other departments of the institution to facilitate continuation of classes with the anticipation of the fleas’ departure. However, this was not triumphant as expected.
Students turned out as per normal on Monday; January 18th thinking that the situation was appropriately dealt with over the weekend, but to their surprise their unwanted guests were just about getting comfortable, as the students were greeted with the dilemma upon entering their classrooms.
The classes that were moved on Friday were accompanied by others on Monday. Pretentious students departed the institution for their homes as staff members tried to persuade and comfort the remaining students. Later that day, some students understood that some teachers were bitten while dwelling in the staff room, but kept quiet so as not to foster fear of students.
On Tuesday; January 19th, students were frustrated with the repetitive situation, causing them to be dissatisfied with the way things were being dealt with. The students confronted the head teacher of the school of whom they got no sort of satisfaction. She was convinced that the infestation was caused by the multiplicity of litter surrounding the institution. However, students were convinced of otherwise as they suggested the fleas may have come from other sources, such as strayed animals which are usually found wandering about the premises.
The students were advised and assisted by their form teachers to spray the infested classrooms that could not be relocated to other department of the institution, with Baygon. This helped to minimise the flea attack on students for the remainder of the day. Later that day, students were informed of the building being thoroughly sanitized, and were told not to go to school the following day, but were expected to return as per normal on Thursday; January 21st.
When students went to the institution, they were advised not to touch the furniture, windows or stair rails and to immediately sanitise their hands if they did.
At around 08:45 hrs, students were told to evacuate the building immediately due to the toxic chemical used the previous day to fumigate the institution.
Students became frustrated of being left to sit in the sun with no positive explanation from their teachers. After being in the sun for approximately 45-60 minutes, the students were told to depart for their respective homes and return to school on Monday; January 25th.
November last, marked three years since this same institution was said to have been attacked by an unseen force after constructing a canteen. The canteen was broken down one week after it was built.
