Dear Editor,
Thanks to a distracting social environment, and an almost total State control of the media, too few of our people, the youths in particular, realise how the moral fabric of our society is being torn asunder and our social clock is ticking in the wrong direction.
This is reflected in killings, misuse of our roadways, bullyism by State functionaries, a fractured judiciary, failure to bring to justice the big drug lords, a punished local government system, a growing gap between the haves and the have nots, defence of absurd award of contracts, while this is happening, the Party in Power has become rather confident that they are now unassailable and somehow behave as though they are vested with some special authority.
One may justly ask, is history repeating itself here?
I refer to the existing relationship between our leaders, State officials and ordinary unconnected folks.
Before the beginning of the 19th Century changes in attitudes in the West were taking place.
Earlier the aristocrats held sway. People accepted without question the Divine rights of Monarchs.
Thanks to many thinkers, revolutions, and martyrs, all this changed in the West and beyond.
Their challenge of the establishment allowed the anti slavery and suffragette movements to advance.
Today, in Guyana, we seem on the verge of a return to this old practice left behind ages ago. Listen, the subtle arrogance of the State bosses. Their protection of their immoral friends.
Yes, many in high places behave as being invested with Divine rights to do as they please and no apologies, no punishment, no charges, no nothing as the lawlessness continues
Only in Guyana could they get away so easily. Here is a random short list.
* Fake marriage
* A young boy being importuned
* Absurd million-dollar contracts awarded to a select few
* Immunity of Roger Khan while in Guyana
* Mystery of Lindo Creek massacre
* Retooling of the language by those in authority that torture equals roughing up
* Shared Governance out of the question
* A meek compliant judicial system/manipulation of the labour movement now a PPP Labour College. Massaging of the security forces recall attempt to foist Mr. Kerik on us
* Only the poor and unconnected go to jail
* The development of a well funded and supplied House Slave Club
* The scandal of wild life and spy equipment
* The hosting of vulgar dance hall artists on our youth
* Super salaries for a few while teachers and public servants must take 6%
* Apparent support of drug trade and killing of 200 of our young men
Last weekend, I came across in my library a satirical cartoon titled: “Exercise of the Rights of Man.” The French citizen depicts the violence that erupted at the fall of the Monarchy in September 1792, murder is attempted by every means: shooting, hanging, stabbing, clubbing.
The victims in the foreground include a gentlewoman, a Bishop and a child; in the background, a nobleman’s house and a church are burning.
It is up to us that this history does not repeat itself.
