If, to satisfy our voracious appetite for energy, we pump all the oil and gas from the foundations of the earth, are we not shooting ourselves in the foot?

And what will you do when the vents of the earth give way, the pall of their towering smoke cover the world so that the sun grows dark, the moon becomes as blood and a strange silence descends on the forest?
Then many will say, “But we did not cut down our trees. We built a hedge around them; and accepted money for their safe keeping.” Then each person will hear a still small voice saying, “Because you shot yourself in the foot.”
