Are we not shooting ourselves in the foot?
Dear Editor,
If, to satisfy our voracious appetite for energy, we pump all the oil and gas from the foundations of the earth, are we not shooting ourselves in the foot?
There must therefore be a direct relationship between fossil fuel exploitation and the frequency of higher magnitude earthquakes occurring around the world from the time of the industrial revolution.
Guyana will keep its forest to no avail; because for 30 pieces of silver, the country has been sold to those who rip open the plates beneath our feet. Indeed, they will shift, the earth will rock, the sea will roar and men will run to the mountains in great fear. Then many will return and wail at the devastation wrought by Mother Nature. In a little while, she will appear and say a very strange thing indeed. A sacrifice must be offered to appease the four forces of nature.
But if the earth is spinning around the sun, shaking and spinning in front of the moon, tottering like a drunken man consumed by ruthless passion for money, power and advantage less he die, would the atmosphere not be troubled? Would it not lean and lag to compensate for the seismic movements in relation to the sun and moon? Would the sea not find it hard to stand still as its waters churn and are pitched from side to side in new ways? Would the crust not fall into fire beneath?
And what will you do when the vents of the earth give way, the pall of their towering smoke cover the world so that the sun grows dark, the moon becomes as blood and a strange silence descends on the forest?
Then many will say, “But we did not cut down our trees. We built a hedge around them; and accepted money for their safe keeping.” Then each person will hear a still small voice saying, “Because you shot yourself in the foot.”
I tell the truth and do not lie, when the conscience of a man is awakened, he sees for himself and does not need another to tell him what is written in the books.
