DEAR EDITOR,
At the climate summit in Copenhagen, the small, poor nations are asked to sacrifice their legitimate aspirations to become developed for the conspicuous consumption of the rich, who are emitting the most carbons that destroy the environment.
President Jagdeo is right in insisting that a fund be generated to compensate the poor countries for their enormous sacrifices in holding back their development using non-traditional energy and protecting their forests. The developing countries must be applauded for taking a position in line with Jagdeo to stand together and demand that their poverty needs to be mitigated in any final climate agreement.
The developed countries must recognize that if the developing countries were to pursue active development using fossil fuel as the developed countries did for decades, global emissions would increase, triggering higher global temperatures that will put the entire globe at risk.
Thus, the developed countries must add to the fund to help countries like Guyana which have committed to preserving its forests. Vishnu Bisram
