The news of the death of Peter Britton was received with great sadness in London. Peter appeared regularly before me when I was a magistrate in Georgetown (1971-72).
He was then a rising junior barrister. He was meticulous in his preparation and always treated the court with courtesy and respect. He was critical of some lawyers for their sloppiness and described them as “not serious”. I am not surprised that he reached the top of his profession.
When I last saw him in 2005 he expressed his gratitude for the legal texts, law reports, manuals and other legal material sent to the court service in Guyana by the Guyana Law Association (GLA) and some of which the honourable Chancellor Carl Singh passed on to the University of Guyana.
The GLA (UK) extends its deepest condolences to members of his family, his students and friends.
Both the bar and UG have lost a distinguished member
