With a name that fits right in among the Brazilian greats of football, Jerazeno ‘Skillaxe’ Bell was born to play ball games. An exceptionally gifted athlete, Bell was introduced to hockey at the tender age of 11 and has flourished since then, becoming one of the country’s top players.
He is also a national squash player and can pretty much impress a crowd in any ballgame that he chooses. Bell is also the recipient of many individual awards such as the MVP in the Ventures indoor 2004 and 2005 tournaments, People’s Choice MVP in the Magnolias Indoor Competition of Nov 2005 and MVP of the Barbados Indoor Classic in Jan 2006.
Jerry represented Guyana at the junior level in 1995 and is now a senior national player who made a significant impression in Guyana’s most recent outings, the Alba Games and the Caribbean Championships in 2007.
A consistent leader in both goals and assists, ‘Skillaxe’ doesn’t just get the job done; he is a true hockey entertainer and does it with exceptional flair. With his dazzling stick work and trademark spin move where he often spins and slides the ball through the legs of hapless defenders, Bell is a delight to watch on the court.
A most valuable player is one who not only impacts the game by his own personal manoeuvres, but one who also makes the players around him better. Such is the ability of Bell as he is gifted with remarkable court vision and is a master of deception. ‘Skillaxe’ in possession of the hockey ball scanning the field for that precise game-changing pass drives fear in the minds of opponents. His cleverness matches his ability to deliver the ball precisely to the right spot at the right time setting up his team-mates with the majority of their opportunities.
With a player of Bell’s class on their side, the Hikers remain strong contenders for the title this year.
