Dear Editor,
In Ravi Dev’s Sunday column, he mentioned the state funeral for Desmond Hoyte, and the bad behaviour of the crowd and the disdain (my word) he saw on the faces of the African elite.
I ask to be forgiven for any inaccuracies in my recollection as unfortunately the newspapers (all) were thrown out (not by me).
I remember the day well, and the excuse that was put forward for the people behaving badly, because, it was said, of the presence at the Public Buildings of people they did not like.
However, when the bad behaviour continued at the Place of the Seven Ponds where the interment took place, it was pointed out, that the people whom they did not like, were not present there.
So the bad behaviour had no real reason for it; it was just simply their bad attitude. It was not the causa belli, but the caassus belli – not the cause for the war, but the occasion for it.
