Over 160 teams across the country have registered for the Guyana Softball League /Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport / Carib Beer/Ansa McAl nationwide Cricket Tournament which is expected to commence on October 11, at various venues.
Speaking at the launching which was held in the Ministry’s Boardroom yesterday, Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, who delivered the feature address said that his entity was pleased to be associated with the venture, referring to the League as a truly national organisation as evidenced by the geographical spread of the tournament.
Dr. Anthony added that the tournament organisers have complemented the work of the Ministry which is to get more persons actively involved in sports, while it is also in keeping with their vision to get more communities drawn into the realm of sports.
“We want to create a co-ordinated space where people can act together to foster unity,” Dr Anthony stated.
“The Organisers have done a tremendous amount of work in putting together the tournament and this will be the first time that we’ve embraced them, but I can assure you that this is not a one-off venture,” he mentioned.
He commended the work done by the organisation, adding that more than anything else there is a need to aggressively promote sports within the communities which could ultimately generate more unity and harmony.
The Minister also lauded the continuous efforts of Ansa McAl which he recognised has been consistent in its assistance to community projects such as the current one.
Ansa McAl Representative Dharshanie Yussuf in her remarks said that her Company sees the tournament as another project for youth development, a feature which is vigorously pursued by them.
“Cricket is all about Guyanese and because we feel this is so, we felt compelled to come on board and offer our assistance,” Yussuf declared.
She spoke of some of the other ventures the Company has been involved in including offering financial assistance to the national Squash team and sponsorship of football tournaments along the East Coast of Demerara among others.
She said they were extremely happy to be working in collaboration with the Ministry and the League to provide another opportunity to the youths of this country.
She however, cautioned the Organisers to be meticulously accountable, while ensuring that the necessary mileage is afforded.
Vice-President of the League Halim Khan in his address said that they were pleased to be bringing off such as tournament for Guyanese to witness and thanked the Ministry and Ansa McAl for coming on board and making the tournament a reality.
The people of Guyana will not only be able to see the making of a champion, but also a big nationwide tournament.
Also, present at the launching were Director of Sport Neil Kumar and Marketing Representative Nigel Worrell.
The winner will receive $200,000 plus a trophy, runner-up-$50,000 plus a trophy, while individual incentives are up for grabs as well.
