What seems to have been a love hate relationship has now come to an end. Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) President Affeeze Khan tendered his resignation from the body by way of a letter dated September 10.
A copy of this letter was received by Kaieteur Sport.
Khan took over the association and had grandiose plans for developing the sport. He got key support and was able to do much in the early part of his tenure. However, things eventually soured with the elections earlier this year creating a sore point among several key persons associated with the sport. This led to friction.
In his letter copied to Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Khan expressed regret, but felt compelled to relinquish his position at the helm. He cited health reasons as a result of continuous activity involved in administering the sport.
Kaieteur Sport was in contact with Khan and he denied allegations being made in an article that appears in these pages.
Khan was firm in his denial of the accusations of him being a racist. He pointed to his wife and many of his friends, who he informed, were black, questioning how could he be a racist with a wife who is coloured and many friends who were black or coloured?
Khan verified that a meeting took place with GOA President KA Juman Yassin and GBBC boss Peter Abdool, while pointing to several persons who he were at odds with him during his presidency.
He felt that they were behind the accusations to soil his character.
He noted that he holds no ill feeling and pledged his service to any future of the association should the need arise.
Here is the full text of that resignation letter:
September 10th, 2009
Mr. Otis Van Lewin Honorary Secretary
Guyana Amateur Boxing Association
Dear Sir,
It is with the greatest regret that I feel compelled to relinquish with immediate effect, my position as the President of The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association. Whilst our country’s amateur boxing program remains near and dear to my heart, I can no longer afford to ignore the debilitating effect on my health occasioned by the continuous level of activity required to effectively administer the association.
It has been for me, both a privilege and a pleasure to have been able to serve alongside many of the venerable stalwarts of the sport and I take this opportunity to thank all who have embraced and supported the sport during my tenure.
I also extend, and ask that you convey on my behalf, my thanks to the Honorable Minister of Sport and the ministry for their kind and generous support.
I shall of course, be available to assist the future President and Board should the need arise.
Sincerely,
Affeeze Khan
