-Alpha, Buxton draw 2-2
Sunburst Camptown led by first half goals from national striker Nigel Codrington (26th) and Kwame La Fleur (35th) easily disposed of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the feature contest of a double-header as play in the inaugural Guyana Football Federation organised National League continued on Sunday, at the GCC ground.
In the opening encounter, Premier League champions Alpha United courtesy of a last minute goal from Captain Howard Lowe scraped a 2-2 draw against an effervescent Buxton United. Gordon Henry had given them the lead in the 36th minute of play.
Buxton’s goals came off the boots of Jamal Phyll (63rd) and Clive Andries (75th)
In the card’s feature, Camptown took the ascendancy when the ever lurking Codrington poked in a ball off a scrimmage that resulted from a corner which saw the advancing GDF custodian being left stranded in his attempt to clear the ball.
They stretched their advantage when a high bouncing delivery from the left flank saw La Fleur reach onto to it and nonchalantly side-footed it into the back of the nets.
After that, the North Georgetown team created a few more chances, but alert goalkeeping from the Army’s sentry between the uprights prevented further embarrassment.
Codrington nearly crushed the uprights with a powerful strike that rebounded back into play, while another effort hit the crossbar and also ricochet back onto the field of play.
GDF apart from a few threatening raids by Stellon David failed to consistently assert pressure on Camptown’s backline that looked composed and assured.
Meanwhile, Alpha squandered a host of chances to gain full points and was lucky to escape with a share of the spoils.
They had taken the lead in the match through defender Gordon Henry in the 36th minute of play and held the 1-0 advantage to the break.
Earlier, Andries failed to convert two excellent chances, first lobbing a ball just over the crossbar with goalkeeper Ronson Williams well beaten, while a slight hesitation to shoot with only the goalkeeper to beat allowed the defence to recover and make the clearance.
Phyll then levelled the scores in the second period, before Andries, who once again showed some hesitancy after collecting a through pass from the right side, but a fast closing Abassi McPherson was booked for a foul, after the referee felt that he had clipped the heels of the striker and pointed to the penalty spot.
The ‘big’ striker stepped up and sent his effort to the right side of the goal, giving Williams no chance of stopping.
