Dear Editor
Sad to read of the possibility of Amerindian languages dying from disuse.
I come from Wales, where about 20 percent (about one million people) speak the Welsh language. I also have multiple family ties with Switzerland, where the Romansch languages are spoken by a significant minority.
The oldest languages in Europe, both Romansch and Welsh are taught in schools and have their own radio and television channels. They live, and here and there they flourish.
Language is more than a means of exchanging information: it is a way of looking at the world, the bedrock of the culture of a community. A language dies, and a people die with it. Wake up, Guyana, before it is too late! Patrick Dobbs
