Dear Editor,
I write reference your article, “GECOM Chairman wasted time, money and failed to deliver polls – govt.”, in your September 8, 2009 issue. This article once again highlights the urgent need for a permanent and independent Elections Commission.
This constitutional body should no longer be stacked with commissioners who are appointed by political parties. They should be replaced with respectable citizens who are seen to be neutral and objective and who have the ability to get the job done.
This is not a new idea. In one of my discussions on this matter with former President Mr. Desmond Hoyte, he indicated to me that ideally this body should be independent and free from political interference. I think the donor agencies need to push for this, as I am not convinced that our political leaders will embrace this notion on their own volition.
Given the current structure of the Elections Commission it is unfair and totally absurd for the President to cuss out the chairman when he (the chairman) is in fact saddled and surrounded by political appointees who help to dictate the process he follows. The politicians cannot have it both ways – if you want to run it then you must also be held accountable.
Further, the Local Government polls have been delayed since 1997 due to the recalcitrance of the political directorate and the Chairman of the Elections Commission should not be trashed for this.
I pray that that one day we will get an independent elections commissions as do most democracies around the world, and may this day be soon.
