Dear Editor,
A letter in your newspaper titled, “The real reasons for the Mormons being expelled”, by Bibi. K. Nandram has shown serious condescension on the Amerindian people of Guyana.
Her comments, “political support from the Amerindians could be bought with a school here, a health centre there, an outboard motor or tractor there” smacks of an arrogance and superiority that implies Amerindians are incapable of making their own choices thus can be ‘bought’.
How come when an Amerindian decides to vote for a party that has assisted in its development he is deemed to have been ‘bought’ while countless other Guyanese who would have voted for the PPP for similar reasons were just simply expressing their democratic rights?
An Amerindian, like any other race in Guyana, has a freedom of choice of political alliance. If he feels that the PPP is doing the right thing for him and country, and is seeing tangible evidence, then he has every right to support that party. That is his democratic right.
It is not for anyone else to be so arrogant as to assume that he was ‘bought’ because of his choice.
Because if that be the case then the majority of Guyanese have been bought since the PPP possesses a majority vote.
