Action in the match between Old Fort and GCC which was played yesterday at the DCC ground.
Old Fort took pole position in this year’s John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd Men’s Second Division Hockey Competition after registering an emphatic 3-0 win over GCC yesterday, at the DCC round in Queenstown.
On target for the winners were Robert Hussein, Dwight McCalman and Clarence Edwards.
Hussein opened the scoring when he latched onto a pass from Compton Dolphin just inside the circle and smashed a powerful shot past GCC’s Michael Xavier in goal.
Shortly after, McCalman, who was exhibiting silky dribbling skills collected an accurate delivery from Jason DeSantos and hit a screamer past a hapless Xavier.
GCC mounted a few raids on their own with Shaka Gill testing Mikhail Smith, but the Old Fort custodian stood up to the challenge, making some brilliant stops to deny GCC.
The reigning indoor champions GCC continued their assault on the Old Fort goal area, but once again solid defending from Dwayne Alleyne and company put paid to their attacks.
Old Fort went to the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
In the second period, the younger Old Fort unit continued to take the fight to their more experienced counterparts, staging some dangerous raids, while GCC’s forwards led by Stuart Gonsalves and Gill counter attacked with ferocity, but no team managed to penetrate each other’s backline.
However, Edwards was able to find himself unmarked in the penalty area after a long pass from the right flank by Alleyne and he made no mistake, hitting a first time shot into an open goal with Xavier well stranded.
The win takes Old Fort into the lead on seven points with a draw, a walkover and a win and they are followed by Degenerates, who have three points after gaining a walkover from Western Dragons, while Hikers have two points and GCC one.
The other game between Degenerates and Western Dragon at GCC ground saw the former open their account by virtue of a walkover.
Dragons are yet to score a point.
The competition continues on Monday.
