The Takutu Bridge linking Guyana with Brazil will officially be commissioned on Monday September 14, according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, who said that the President Bharrat Jagdeo and Brazilian President Lula Da Silva will be in attendance.
Following the official ceremony, the two presidents will be engaged in a range of bi-laterals. This, Dr. Luncheon said, will be focused on the events subsequent to the opening such as traffic and customs among others.
Earlier this year, to the surprise of the local authorities, a commissioning ceremony was held by the State of Roraima, but Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett debunked claims that the Bridge had been officially commissioned and open for business.
Originally, the commissioning of the bridge was scheduled for April 27, but due to logistical problems on the Guyana side this deadline was not met.
