Dear Editor,
I have observed that GRA’s audit teams comprise many young graduates of UG who hardly have an appreciation of how business works. Neither do their non graduate staff. Thus, audits take unduly long and when their findings are eventually made known, years would pass and when these findings are questioned they become annoyed.
Isn’t it normal audit practice that, as an audit progresses, questions are asked of the operator of the business so that clarification can be had? GRA does not do this. Thus, when its report comes out years later, a business has to unearth source documents to see what GRA is referring to.
Imagine GRA questioning an expenditure of $11,000; and demanding tax on that and $1,000 for monthly allowance given to a truck driver, so that he can stay in touch with his dispatches! There seems to be no consistent approach by GRA. The GRA will allow something in one company and disallow the same thing in another. Why? Some can “slack” while others do not?
There are businesses which take pride in keeping their records straight. GRA is now forcing those businesses to do the wrong thing. I am sure that GRA can go after the millions which contractors receive for doing poor quality work and do not pay tax, rather than turning honest business people into criminals.
Where is the head of the GRA? Does he know how his staff operates? Purshotam Persaud
