Dear Editor,
Our attention has been directed to a letter in the Kaieteur News edition of August 20, 2009, headlined “Penny wise, Pound foolish.”
Your correspondent on the subject of electricity theft, in passing questioned whether the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will “organise and keep hearings in other areas so as to get the wider view from consumers and prospective consumers.”
The PUC wishes to advise that the Commission holds annual public outreach programmes thoughtout the country along with a number of other programmes, aimed primarily at soliciting the views of consumers with respect to the services of the public utilities under our jurisdiction.
Our plans for instance, for the remainder of the year will see outreaches conducted in New Amsterdam and Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast.
At our outreach programmes representatives from the various utility services are present and they answer questions and report back to their respective companies what were the concerns of consumers.
As an aside, our consumer awareness programmes are conducted all year round, and this is where the PUC staff visit various public places to meet and interact with consumers. We have found that the owners of businesses are particularly receptive to us and facilitate our discourses with the consumers.
Our schools education programme which started in 2008 has seen us engaging with students and staff of secondary schools and we have found that the students are generally keen to learn about the utilities, the role of the regulator, and their role as prospective consumers.
Our next outreach is slated for Thursday, August 27, 2009 where we will be meeting with the public at the Cornelia Ida Primary School, WCD at 4.30 p.m. Two months ago we held a similar outreach at Soesdyke, E.B.D.
