In sultry conditions at the Blairmont ground in West Berbice Friday, Police and West Berbice advanced to today’s semi-final of the inaugural Nagico 20/20 cricket competition for teams in Berbice.
National all-rounder Steven Jacobs was the star of the preliminary round with 5-10 from 4 overs but this was in a losing cause for Bermine who crumbled for 89 in 19.4 overs against West Berbice chasing 94 to win on a slow track and fairly fast outfield.
National sprinter Michael Saul hit an even half-century to spur Police to a 25-run victory against Blairmont to set up the Police/West Berbice semi-final. The winner will clash with the visiting St Maarten team in the final from 14:00hrs.
The Bermine line-up, with 5 guest players in their side stuttered to 36-3 and never really recovered as off-spinner Krishendat Ramoo (4-1-12-0) made scoring almost impossible at one end while Dwayne Duke (2-13), West Indies Under-19 selectee Keon Joseph (2-21) and the multi-talented Keith Fraser (3-16) combined to bowl their team to victory as the Bermine batsmen approached the small target with strange caution to dig themselves into a deep hole.
Earlier, Jacobs and Georgetown-based Guyana pacer Trevon Garraway (3.5-0-8-2) rocked the West Berbice batting as the Region 5 side struggled to get the ball away.
Garraway got rid of Colin Duke (2) and Ralph Ogle (1) to leave the score on 4-2 in the 3rd over.
West Berbice then slipped from 64-4 to 74-8 as Jacobs, who also played for Bermine in the last Berbice first division competition, grabbed 4 wickets in 10 balls to finish with his best 20/20 first division figures.
Artley Bailey capitalized on three chances to top score with 25 while Kwesi Mentore who made 24, was the only other batsman to reach double figures as off-spinners Devon Clements (3-0-9-0), Charles Shepard (3-0-17-0) and left-arm spinner Eugene La Fleur (3-0-18-0) also made runs hard to come by.
Although off-spinner Andrew Williams gave away 26 runs from his 3 overs and a few umpiring decisions went against Bermine the New Amsterdam side had no excuse for not qualifying for the semi-final as only Ishwar Singh of the batsmen reached 20.
Fraser removed Ramdeen (7) at 15-1 while the lively Joseph trapped Clements (1) LBW although the ball clearly hit the inside edge at 21-2.
Anthony D’Andrade (11) was then run out at the non-strikers’ end when the bowler deflected the ball onto the stumps. Jacobs (4) struggled to score before Dwayne Duke to long-off while 2 runs later Duke had La Fleur (9) caught behind as Bermine slumped to 38-5.
Reaz Kassim (18) and Singh offered some hope with a 26-run partnership before Singh seemed unfortunate to be LBW to Joseph at 66-6. Kassim took 11 from 5 balls off Colin Duke before he was bowled in the same over at 8-7 and Bermine, who had to make 8 to win off the final over with their last pair at the crease fell short by 5 runs.
The umpiring was generally poor with bad decisions also going against West Berbice. r
In the day’s first game, Saul and Kenroy Henry (22) added 65 for the first wicket for Police before Henry was LBW to Romaine Boodram.
Albert Sinclair (23) offered some resistance as Police reached 180-8 with Nadesh Basdeo taking 4-18 before dismissing Blairmont for 125 in 19.3 overs.
Eon Abel made 20 and Heeralall Bridgelall 18 as Cylus Gibson took 3-23, St Maarten based Gary Solomon 2-21 and Andel Doris 2-14 for the Cops.
