DEAR EDITOR,
The death of Retired Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Colonel, Godwin Mc Pherson, has continued to rob Guyana of its share of “true patriots”. His love for country is unquestionable.
Shortly after his retirement from the GDF, I met Mr. Mc Pherson for the first time at a dinner held in his honour by Former President and Late Leader of the PNCR Desmond Hoyte. My first impression of the late Colonel was formed when he gave his speech in response to the supportive, attentive and eager gathering which had earlier offered words of best wishes and encouragement to him.
In what can be described as a brief, compelling and convincing speech he warmed the Ocean View Convention Centre with his “frank talk” and “unedited emotions”. Since then, as I have worked with the late Godwin Mc Pherson on various projects, on behalf the PNCR, and have found him to be a man of “less talk and pure action” his desire to complete tasks and get things done according to schedule, caused me to have a greater appreciation for time.
One project that stands out in mind was the project to transform Congress Place, Halls of Heroes, into an atmosphere, conducive, for the celebration of the life of the late Desmond Hoyte, on his passing. This project, which was identified as the responsibility of the party’s youth arm, saw the active involvement of Colonel, who ensured that we stayed on top of the task. His main interest was to ensure that the flaws, if any, were minimal. He ensured that every of piece of fixture, and furniture was carefully fixed in its appropriate place, he and did not hesitate to apply some of his military skills on us when he believed that we were lagging.
Despite, his rigorous and disciplined way of doing things the youths loved him; even though, from time to time there might be a whisper, outside of his hearing, that “he think we on the drill square”.
I am not sure I ever saw him walk at a slow pace.
Retired Colonel Godwin Mc Pherson had qualities that attracted almost everyone; his unbelievable displays of energy and enthusiasm to get things done were extraordinary. He was a great asset to the organizations of which he aligned himself.
He will be greatly missed. My condolences go out to his wife, children and other relatives, may they find comfort in God’s unending love and care.
May his soul rest in peace.
