The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has expressed condolences to the family and friends of the late Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation President, Godwin McPherson, who died Monday evening.
Below is the full text of the statement:
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is deeply saddened at the passing of retired [Guyana Defence Force] Colonel Godwin McPherson. Many were the disciplines through which Col. McPherson served his country but the ministry wishes to emphasise his contribution to the nation’s sport development.
As an ardent sports person generally, but specifically with regards to the administration of basketball, there were those who disagreed with his approaches but from a military background, perhaps, he stood firm in the interest of basketball.
Even though “Mac”, as he was often called, served as President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation, he was also a serving member on the National Sports Commission for a number of years. He also served as manager for the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) team.
“Mac” was also willing accept challenges and ensure success at the conclusion of each IGG event. His view of sport was wide as he was good at badminton and cricket; both as a player and an adviser to the youth and was always willing to import both experience and technique.
Col. McPherson was meticulous in his planning and always willing to share ideas and useful advice to his counterparts.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission, at this time, extend sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Col. Godwin McPherson.
